Gunstock Blanks

Tiger Hunt gunstock blanks are kiln-dried to 6-8% humidity and then stored in a controlled atmosphere. The blanks for each gun type are bandsawed from patterns which will make all but the most radical styles of stock configuration. Blanks are surface-planed on both sides and are at least 2-1/2" thick. Full-stock Pennsylvania Long Rifle Blanks will accept a minimum 42" barrel. Extra-long Blanks are available at extra cost. Extra-thick (2-3/4" - 3" thick) blanks are available at 20% over regular blank prices. (Price increase in thicker blanks is partly due to excessive loss during drying.)

GRADING OF BLANKS

Grading curly maple and other stock wood is a highly subjective but necessary endeavor, as  different builders are looking for different characteristics in wood and their finished product.  Fortunately, there is enough of a concurrence on what is desirable to lend itself to the following grading system.  The following is a brief explanation of Tiger Hunt's grading method for curly maple rifle stock-quality wood.

GRADE CHARACTERISTICS
Exhibition  Fancy grade, strong figure.
5  The figure has a constant pattern throughout the piece.
4  The figure is constant in its pattern throughout the piece, and may be preferred by those who like a slightly wider curl.
3  Curl will be evident throughout piece, but may not hold constant pattern.
2  Piece will have figure but may not hold constant pattern. There will usually be slight areas of openness devoid of curl.
B  Lightly figured. Usually an interesting piece.

Grade 2 to 4 are very appropriate for pre-revolutionary war long rifles.

Occasionally, we have pieces available which defy grading and are - without question - superior to Exhibition grade. Prices on these Presentation grade pieces begin at approximately 50% above Exhibition grade prices. Drop us a line if you are interested in such a piece. Be advised however, that they are not always readily available and may incur a wait or custom work fee.
